I have 87 dodge ram 4x4 with an automatic tranny which is gone I am wondering how much work is involved in putting a automatic tranny out of a 2wd dodge ram. they are both 318 and the same year trucks. I know the tail shaft will have to be changed but does anything else need to be changed

First you need to take the driveshaft off of the vehichle, then you need to take the backwards mount off of the transmissions wich is ussually located on the bottom side, make sure you have the trani supported by a pole jack when you take the mount off as it will fall down with the engine and cuase alot of damage, next take your trani coolant lines off, then youi need to disconnect your electrical connectors and then disconnect the shifter rod, next you need to take the dust cover or shroud off the front side of the trani and take the bolts off of the fly wheel that bolt into the torque converter, there are usually three some have four bolts. support your trani by a hydraulic lift designed for transmissions and take the mounting bolts off the back side of the transmission, another note, it does not matter if any fluid comes out as you will be filling it back up. thats all there is to it, you also do not need to worry about securing the engine as it will not go anywhere.
