Osteospermum

I bought a 18-inch hanging basket with a mixture of verbena, petunia and "Lemon Symphony" Osteospermum (Proven Winners). The basket hangs on the southwest corner of the house and receives plenty of light during the days and sunshine in the afternoon. The pot is well drained and we water it regularly with a low dose fertilizer and plain water.
We have been cutting off the dead flowers of all three type of plants in the pot.
The other flowers are doing fine, however the osteospermum although it has not stopped flowering, the size of the flowers has been shrinking week by week, now the flowers are the size of a "quarter". I interpret the reduction in size to be a consequence in a reduction in the health of the plant.
What can be done to prevent the flowers from becoming even smaller?
Could it be that they were crowded at the nursery were I bought them in the spring and now that they have grown they need to be separated?
