I am trying to trace the origins of John Davies. I know that is quite a challenge. I have found a likekely candidate in the 1901 Census living in Rawmarsh, near Rotherham, Yorkshire.
He is living with a Booth family and is shown as "Nephew".
The transcript says that he was born in ROSS, shown in fairly bold writing, whilst in less heavy writing next to it it says Carn.
Is there any possibility that ROSS is a district of Carnarvon, or is there some other possible explanation.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
