I am trying to identify a small "antique couch" that I inherited but have no connection with whatsoever. It is best described, as of now, as a fainting couch; small (5' long), low only 22" at the highest point of the right sided rolled armrest and having no other back or sides. Pleated at the rounded corners and centered gathers on the sides of upholestered skirting to the floor.

You have a typical chase louge or commonly refered to as a fainting couch. It is low and small as of its age typically early 19th century 1820-1850. Not a valued piece of furniture but unique and in good original condition around 1000.00. It would be stuffed with straw and a covering of horse hair or batt cotton.

Thank you so much for the information, I hope to sell the piece and will ask considerably less than the number you quoted as worth. I did find that there was straw stuffing and it has more than likely been recovered although it was very well done with high quality upholstery fabric in beige with a very light rose colored design. It is in great shape; very sturdy, no rips or worn spots but does need a good cleaning. I like the piece but do not have room for it in my home. As an author, I'd love to see it go to someone who would enjoy an afternoon with a book and a cat nap. Thanks again for the info!
