Bulalataylor
I am the great grand daughter the Captain Alfred Bulala Taylor who was also court marshaled the same time as Harry Morant, Peter Hancock and George Witton.

My question is , Is there any way I can make contact with the families of these great men. I would be great to get to know something of them

Thanks

I know a great deal about Alfred Taylor, your great grand dad but would always like to know more.
You will have difficulty contacting any close relatives of Morant because that was not his real name and he had no known descendents nor did Witton. Handcock married and had a family and his descendents still live in Australia.

I am the great great grand daughter of Captain Alfred Bulala Taylor. My grandfather, Victor Taylor is the son of Charles Taylor, the youngest son of Bulala.

My grandfather would be happy to share his memories of his time on Avoca Farm. We would also like to know of and communicate with any descendants of Bulala's.

Thank you.

Hi Bulalataylor

I am the great grandson of Captain Alfred James 'Bulala' Taylor his wife was Phoebe Taylor and there is a chapter in a book called 'The first steps in civilizing Rhodesia' about them. He was never court marshaled at the same time as Breaker Morant. Proof of this is that he fought in the First World War. My interests lie more on trying to find out about Phoebe and I read in this thread that there is someone who has pictures, documents and other paraphernalia about Alfred Taylor. Is there any way that I can make contact with this person? Further information about Captain Alfred Taylor is that he got his nickname through stick fighting with the Matabele and not killing. Not to say he didn't do a lot of that.

Bulala Taylor was court-martialled in mid January-mid february 1902 on two charges of murder of 1) Five Afrikaner men and a boy; and 2) of an African man. He was found not guilty. Therefore there was no impediment to serving in the First world war.

Phoebe was the daughter of Richard Clarke, a trader in Shoshong, and his wife who was daughter of Gasiboni of the Batlaping. Phoebe first married Arthur Wolfenden (actually Wolfenstein, a German) and he died on his way back from guBuluway, leaving her with two young children.. She married Bulala in Shoshong in September 1887; he thus became stepfather to the Wolfenden children who also grew up on Avoca and had descendants.

Could you please let me know where you got this info from? I have made contact with someone who has been researching Taylor for years and who I suspect is a participant in this discussion. I would like to confer with him as there has never been mention of some of this info.

The information comes from detailed research that I have carried out, which I am still pursuing because I would like to learn about the children of Phoebe and Bulala=who did they marry, where did they spend their life, what sort of job etc. That is just to get some sort of idea of how they fared in a racially discriminatory society. However, i have learned almost nothing from this site because participants do not reveal their names and are not forthcoming.
ADDITION. If you are seriously interested in what I said in my last post, there are two additions. 1) strictly speaking Bulala was not 'court-martialled' but tried under martial law but by the same board of officers who holding the courts martial at the same time; this was because Bulala resigned his commission more than 3 months before the time of the trials, in order to evade a court martial, not realising that he would be tried just the same but with a technical difference. After the not guilty verdict he may have rejoined the Army but I have not been able to verify that, and i incline to doubt it. 2) Phoebe was born about 1871, probably a couple of years earlier. She died in 1948.

Hi Raymond/Stanley. (Surname?)

I can give you info on my family and a few names of other descendants but you must understand that because our Paternal lineage was European we were registered as that. Some of Phoebe's children continued to inter marry and were deemed to be coloured. On my side, unknown to me, we followed the European culture and was recognized as such. I suspect that "heliwest" is the Joe West I have been corresponding with. My interests are similiar to yours but I am interested to find out if Phoebe's lineage goes back to the little white girl that was abducted at the Vegkop massacre. If you are interested in contacting me my email address is: golden04051@gmail.com and the name is Tony.

Hi Frank

This is a list of children that Taylor had. I know that Phoebe had 2 or 3 children from Wolvendon, I cannot find a list I had.

Maude (Lindeboom) , Nora (Davies), Adie (I think really named Adrian), Alfred, Freddy, Claud, Albert and Charles

My name is Tony and my grandmother was Nora Taylor. Can you elaborate on the list of children you have of Taylor's because I don't know of an Anne?

Dear Heliwest, Thank you so much for your response to my initial enquiry. Thank you also for letting me know about Morant and Witton. Are you in contact with the decendants of Handcock in Australia? It would be amazing to touch base with these people.I would also like to see what you have on my Great Grand Pa. If there is anyway I can help you learn more, please let me know. Is there any connection between you and the Author of "Shoot Straight You Bastards" Joe West? Very exciting, I look forward to hearing from you.

Dear RSROB, Thank you so much for your response to my initial enquiry. It’s wonderful to know that you are entering an article about my Great Grand Pa in a Zimbabwean history journal. Would you please let me know the name of your journal, so I can be on the lookout for it. Where in the world are you based It would be great if we could meet one day to exchange notes etc. I am based in the UK at the moment. I am actually in the process of collecting information as I intend to write a book on him one day, as he actually brought my Dad up, who was his First Grand Son. Have a great day. I look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Tony Thanks ever so much for your input. I actually do know of you and that’s very exciting. My Dad often spoke about Your Grand Mother. I knew all the other of Bulala's Children, but for some unknown reason I didn’t ever get to know Nora. My father was a great one for family relationships, took us to all the relatives. Grandma Maud and all the others were household names and people in our house. I did get to meet; I think it’s one of your Aunts also called Nora who married Rashid Osman. In fact she is still alive I just saw her on my last trip to Zim a few weeks ago. She is now in a facility for the elderly.
It would be lovely to touch base with you we could exchange so many notes as My Dad never lived with his own father but was brought up by Bulala and Grandma Phoebe. Do you have any information on any of the following families? The Morant, Witton and Handcock descendants.
I would love to hear all the exciting information you have to share. I look forward to hearing from you.

Hello Jeophrey,
I wish I could shed some light onto this but I’m afraid I don’t have any information of this incident. I would be very grateful if you could furnish me with some of the details so I can try and do some research with regards to your Great Grand Father and Bulala Taylor. For example place of Incident or anything that can through some light on it, etc. I look forward to hearing from you.
