Age Discrimination in Employment Act

I am about to receive a mediated settlement in an age discrimination employment lawsuit. I have been told that damages or settlements arising from age discrimination cases are not considered compensatory or punitive, but only as back pay or front pay. Does this mean that the amount is subject to not only income tax, but FICA and medicare payroll taxes as well? Would appreciate some insight on this matter. Thanks.
