I already started reading chapter three, and in the middle of it, David's home-life is discussed. It just occurred to me, what exactly was David thinking about his mother? I mean, he thinks one thing, mostly positive, about his mother and then turns around and says something kind of negative about her. I was just wondering what everybody thought about the information it gives us about David.

This background info about David is obviously very important. I think the flip flop he does about his mom is mostly natural. On the one hand, he is frustrated at his mom about the jello, but mostly he is just frustrated period because he has to take care of his grandmother--not, I don't think, that he doesn't want to. Then he realizes that his mother tries the best that she can. She just has a lot on her plate.

That's kind of a quick epiphany if you ask me.
