I. The high-minded ideals of the Enlightenment exist simultaneously with the growing slave trade that keep the Alantic System going. While we as modern readers can obvious conflict between the two, why were so many proponents of liberity and equality so ready to overlook this tension and defend slavery? Dose Equiano address this either directly or indirectly? How dose he reconcile beliefs in equality and the deplorable conditions of slaves, or dose he even do so at all?
