IDEF0 was developed at Northrop Corporation in El Segundo, CA, in 1966, under the Air Force ICAM (Integrated Computer Aided Manufacturing) program. Developed with taxpayer funds, it was in the public domain.

Softtech commercialized the product, first bringing it to market in 1972.

I have, someplace in my archives, the original IDEF0 manuals from Northrop, copyright 1966 and Softtech copyright 1972 (if I remember the Softtech date correctly).

In 1985-6, Northrop developed the process modeling technique that later became Rummler-Brache. It was presented at a DoD conference in Indianapolis in 1986, years before Rummler-Brache commericialized the product. I have the original of that presentation in my files.
