How would a patrol officer go about stalking his ex-fiancee?
I'm writing a book to hopefully be published ad I need some help. My main character finds out her ex-fiance has been cheating on her so to remove herself from the situation, she moves to NC where he follows her after graduating from the police academy in Chicago. He the gets a job at the Wilmington Police Department

He is now stalking her and is becoming increasingly jealous once she meets someone else.

also who would be qualified enough to look into the case?
at this point the officer has just bee stalking her hoping he isn't found out but her best fried knows he's around, she tells her that she's bee following him She asks her dad, a criminal investigation detective to help and what kind of reasons could a regular officer give for needing to use surveillance equipment? Only people in law enforcement may answer if at all possible. Thank you

As law enforcement,he must know some "less than savory people". Why doesent he get some low life to do his footwork, dirty work?

He could have stayed at a motel when first coming to the city/town, or in the normal course of his duties,he gave someone a "break", and now calls in the favor...... as a recently released ex-felon,{now a 50 yr old college student}, I know that cops use contacts all the time, I'v seen it with my own eyes...Being new to the town, he would quickly learn the areas to meet such people, every town has an area where drugs and the related activity go on...

Or could he use his contacts from Chicago? Like bring them to NC and put them up for as long as he needed? And this may sound like a stupid question, but why exactly do officers need those types of contacts anyway? I guess the better question is why would a cop WANT tp get in with shady people? Tp make arrests? if that were the case why keep them as contacts

Based on experience,a large portion of investigative law enforcement work, and success,is from info, and leg work done by those who are in the...'life'..those who live with those that are targeted by police..they help the police, sometimes out of..debt,sometimes gratitude, and, believe it or not, even out of a sense of civic duty...take me,for example..even though i had a drug problem, and sold drugs and committed other crimes,I still had a sense of....civic duty, moral correctness..and,alot of us have boundries, stuff we view as wrong...crazy world we live in ,isnt it?? lol And,I had befriend more than a few cops over the years..theyre people too, right?
