How to you spell "raise" as in a verticle mine shaft that provides access from one level to the one above or below it.
ladders were inside so we had easy access to the next level

I worked in a mine in placerville california back in 69.
We use to refer to the vertical shafts as raises. i never knew how they spelled it,only how it was said.
