Like then, we have had ongoing immigration in high numbers during a time of economic hardship and industrial transition.
Like then, most of today's immigrants are poor and have little education.
Like then, there are great sociopolitical, economical, and educational gaps between the children of immigrants and their culturally/generationally integrated peers.
Like then, the people of this country remain polarized on immigration.
Like then, cultural stereotyping and discrimination are explicit, implicit, and pervasive in all levels of society.
And like then, crime and corruption walk tall in fancy suits.
