How does one read the following lines?

Quali colombe dal disio chiamate
con l'ali alzate e ferme al dolce nido
vegnon per l'aere dal voler portate;

[Tweb Dante]
Even as doves when summoned by desire,
borne forward by their will, move through the air
with wings uplifted, still, to their sweet nest,

Dorothy Sayers:
And as desire wafts homeward dove with dove
To their sweet nest, on raised and steady wing
Down-chopping through the air, impelled by love

R. Pinsky
...As doves whom desire has summoned,
With raised wings steady against the current glide
Guided by will to the sweetness of their nest

Why the "as"? I read the lines as:
These doves by desire called to their sweet nest
with wings raised and steady
coming through the air, carried [driven] by their will

"al dolce nido" relates back to "chiamate"
Desire "Disio" and will "voler" sum up the nature of Paolo and Francesca's offence, i.e., mortal sin. The irony is that their flight has no sweet landing.

Am I wrong in my reading?
