Qur'an and Hadith donot support division in religion.

The main sects Shia and Sunni were formed because of the dispute over the leadership of the muslims.please google for complete stories.

my purpose of commenting is to say that :

Allah did not Say the believers are those who are Sunni's, or Shias, and He Warns us of these sects. Tere are numerous references to Ahadith where Muhammad (SAW) profecied about divisions, and advised to follow the group of largest members.

From Quran:
Quran 3:103. "And hold fast to the rope of God, altogether, and do not become divided."

Quran 6:159. "As for those who divided their religion and became sects—you have nothing to do with them. Their case rests with God; then He will inform them of what they used to do "

from Ahadith:

It was narrated that Mu’adh bin Jabal said:
prophet muhammad said : ".... I asked Him not to let my nation be destroyed by enemies from outside, and He granted me that. And I asked Him not to let them be destroyed by drowning, and He granted me that. And I asked Him not to let them be destroyed by fighting among themselves, but He refused that."

Anas bin Malik said:
“I heard the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam) saying: ‘My nation will not unite on misguidance, so if you see them differing, follow the great majority.’”
