How do historians view the Victorian era?

Historians have puzzled over the era's strict adherence to a system of prudish morals, in co-existence with a harsh class system that victimized many.

Some less-than-ideal social phenomena of the age included child labor and prostitution. Social movements arose out of the era's reform efforts.
