How did the Great Depression contribute to the appearance of Hoovervilles across the US?

The economic chaos of the Great Depression left many men and families homeless. While some of the homeless men had the skills to construct houses of stone and even wood, other families had to build their homes out of scrap metal, cardboard, and anything else they could find.
