Communities grew in WV's isolated gorges and mountain valleys; the rough terrain discouraged travel into and out of the region in the days before modern technology made travel quick and easy.

WV's rough terrain made construction of interstate highways there very difficult; some of the world's foremost highway architects had to contribute to the project.
