The Roman Catholic Church as at the height of its influence and most paintings of this time had Christian themes. The Birth of Venus is clearly pagan-themed.

Nude women were not depicted in the art of the time; if they were, they were used as symbols for lust. The Venus in this painting is obviously chaste.
