How did Grant's military strategy lead to Union victory in the American Civil War?

Grant's immediate concern was to overcome the Army of Northern Virginia; he put General Sherman in charge of Union troops in the West and moved his own headquarters to Virginia.

He devised a strategy that would strike at the Confederacy from multiple directions. Sherman and Nathaniel Banks came up from the South, while others came in from the North and West.
