How close were the barracks to the "perimeter" at u-tapao, thailand air base during the vietnam war. I lived in Bldg. 36 directly behind bldg. 22 (library). I really would appreciate if someone could provide me with an answer. thanking you in advance.

I want to say that the perimeter was right behind the barracks, but i'm not 100% on that. I'm needing to know for a herbicide claim. Will let you know what I find. GRB

I cannot remember the number to my hootch. But I do believe that we were very close to the perimeter. My hootch was directly in line with the staging area for the B-52s, we even saw a U2 and a Blackbird land. I also have a claim for the effects of pesticides. Ischemic Heart disease, diabetes 2. nueropathy and high blood pressure. I worked at the bomb dump mostly holding the trucks at the entrance to the dump until they came and escorted them in to the dump. But of coarse I cannot prove exposure. But I keep trying. Please let me know what you find out.

If you are seeking info on Agent Orange in Thailand, maybe I can help. Army Field Manual 3-3 (December 1971)- go to page 5-5, section d, last sentence. It reads: "A 500-meter buffer distance should be maintained to avoid damage to desirable vegetation near the target." In essence, this means if they sprayed it on the perimeters (ground dissemination) that anything within 500 meters (about 1650 feet) INSIDE THE FENCE was exposed. If you can put yourself just about anywhere on the base, you can argue that you were exposed to AO because you regularly spent time within the 1650 window INSIDE the fence.

You are correct---the hooch area was right in front of the perimeter fence.

back pack sprayers were used to control vegetation in that area.

I worked at the Civil Engineer Supply point which was way across base near the perimeter as well. I am fighting
with VA as I have IHD.

Anything you can contribute would be helpful. I need someone to agree as to where the CE supply point was located.

I was with the 635th CMBT SUPT GRP, Finance Office.

We were housed in the DZK mod barracks, def close to the perimeter if you look at these links.

Daily there would be trucks driving down the road spraying stuff [I assume it was herbicides and insect control chemicals between the road and the fence line].

I would think if enough of us certified to the VA they would have to acknowledge that anyone who lived in the Mod Barracks had duty at or near the perimeter of the base.

Also exploring herbicide claims, perpetual 45 year skin problems, diabetes Type II, Heart Arrhythmia, was hospitalized at U-T for mysterious rapidly developing skin infection that turned into blood poisoning. They also made us run along the perimeter for our PT qual, [1.5 mi in 12 mins as I recall].

You are right, I was at U-Tapao 67- 68 & lived in the barracks next to the chow hall next to your barracks. I took pictures from my barracks and there was nothing but brush qnd bare spots. In the background was a mountain completely bare.
