How I met General Robert T. Frederick

General Frederick was a highly decorated soldier, and one of the youngest to achieve such a lofty rank. I wasn't aware of any of this when - at the age 0f 8 - I saw him at a function at my father's NCO club at Fort Ord, California, where Gen. Frederick was post commander. He looked like Mandrake the Magician (and he was nicknamed that by my dad), with straight black hair, trim mustache and tall, slender build. He asked me if I wanted to be a soldier like my father. I said, I didn't - I wanted to be a general. He raised his eyebrows, glancing at my dad.
"And why is that?" he asked.
"Because he drives a bigger Packard than my daddy!"
I just finished reading a book about the war in Italy, and Frederick's role there. And I discovered there's a movie about him, called "The Devil's Brigade," made in 1968 and is available on Netflix. So, almost 60 years later, I have become a Robert T. Frederick groupie, and new admirer.

I would like to hear from anyone who knew him.
