'atom' is a Greek word that means uncuttable. it was used by greek and roman 'atomists' to refer to the stuff that makes up everything in the universe. They postulated the theory, but couldn't observe the science.
when the atomic project was running in the 1940's, it was assumed that the modern atom was the smallest possible particle - the sub-atomic particles were observed later!
the theories of classical atomism are available as 'on the nature of things' by Lucretius - many translations in print. it gives a true unifying theory of everything!
