The governor of New France granted lands belonging to the Oka Mohawk to a Catholic seminary in 1717. The Mohawk claimed that this land was to be held in trust for them by the seminary.

In 1961, the Mohawk tribe filed a legal complaint when a golf course was constructed on this land.
