Lee seemed to suffer from overconfidence in his Army. He has recently celebrated a string of major victories, but had lost important and seasoned commanders, such as General Stonewall Jackson.

Lee's methods of giving generalized orders and leaving it up to his subordinates to work out the details did not work with his inexperienced sub-command.
