Hi - can anyone help me to remember the title of what I thought was a Catherine Cookson film (from what I recall it was sililar to her type of story and set in the North of England)

The story is about a red curly haired girl who was well educated and could speak French. She is taken on as a maid and helped other servants to read and write.(her brother who she taught to write signs with a cross for his wages rather than get into trouble for being educated). Whilst working in the laundry room she defends a fellow worker against the son and daughter who live in the house and pushes the daughter into some water - she is then tied up by the daughter and whipped.

The daughter becomes pregnant and goes away to have the baby but she dies and the red haired girl brings the baby home with the son whom she has fallen in love with.

The bed ridden wicked grandmother denounces the son.

I hope I am not getting 2 or 3 stories mixed up and hope someone can help me find my film
