Hello. What's the best way to repair a damaged top corner of a brick house?
I hired a tuckpointer to repair damaged areas of my house. The tuckpointer didn't do what he had agreed to do, and the relationship was not a good one even though I thought it ended reasonably well.
I was up on my ladder yesterday, painting my house. I discovered that, at the top front corner of my house, there was a 5/8" crack in the horizontal bricks along the top edge of the house. The crack extended around the corner of the house and cracked a brick around the corner. At first I thought it was some freak type of damage. Then it dawned on me that the tuckpointer may have done the damage deliberately, given that the crack was clean and fresh. It appeared that the tuckpointer may have taken a chisel to create a crack and then he pushed the chisel so it make the crack larger and also damage brick around the corner.
I want nothing more to do with the tuckpointer because he is such bad news. I have been studying mortar mixes and tuckpointing techniques and wonder if this is a repair I can do myself.

Hi i have done a lot of jobs like this and the most common cause of cracking in the mortar joint in the top corners of houses is the roof spreading i am not saying that is what is going on in yours with out seeing the job i cant tell. things to look for are the brickwork bellying out the ridge/hip tiles on the roof the mortar is cracked. it can sometimes simply be water running off the roof and down the face of the brickwork. in that case then all you need to do is grind the old mortar out at leased 15mm deep if you go deeper its ok then wash the dust out with water. re point with a strong mix of 3 parts sand 1 part cement. i hope this helps and you understand my reply if you still need more help drop me an email rlm_brickwork@hotmail.co.uk thanks rob
