Hello I just had to find out something from anyone who can help me. about researching the painting finally and was interested in finding anything out that I could. The sale was at the Sherry Butt home and I started first by reaserching the owners of the home. In the search I found out that Margaret McAuley Butt was related to Laird Mcauley whos decendents owned ardencaple castle. I now do believe that this painting is of the castle it shows the tower and a partial building. Upon researching more I saw that in 1823 Horace vernet painted a painting of Laird McAuley holding a head of a person he must have killed in battle. I have tried to research this to see if he would have painted this castle also but can not find anything out about it. I was wondering when he painted the painting of McAuley would the castle at that time been intact? I see in my research that some say in the 19 century parts of the castle were still intact other than the tower but they have no
