Growing up in the Bronx I remember in the 1960's Jim Henson living in the building next to ours on W 179th St. I remember sitting on the steps on his building and him passing by, we would yell to him Hi! Mr. Henson! and he would say Hi, guys! His voice sounded like Kermit the frog, but lower. He was always nice to us and told us anytime we wanted to see his puppets we could go to his house and see them. My mother used to tell us that their was something wrong with a man that played with puppets and I remember getting yelled at by her because we told her they were muppets.Years later when she realized who he was she laughed and my brother and I told her there was nothing wrong with him. He use to talk to us many times when he was passing by. I also remember he always had a briefcase.
He lived the apt under Jacob Javits. We used to call the building 1950 or the castle it was half a block big I lived at 2001 University Avenue. How come that part of his life in the Bronx is never mentioned in any books about him?
