The Greeks believed in the atom as the world's smallest indivisable unit. In the 5th century BC Greek philosophers posited that all matter was made up of these units.
Greek philosophical atomism reconciled the opposing schools of thought championed by Heraclitus and Parmenides. Heraclitus believed that the nature of existence is change and Parmenides believed that the nature of existence is illusion.
