In the Romanesque an Early Gothic periods, the large stained glass windows were supported by huge iron frames. As the windows grew larger artists divided them with stone traceries.

I am not fresh on Medieval times but know about rose windows and the structures of Gothic cathedrals and other vertical type structures.
