Have been engaged in escalator safety methods and developing procedures for reduction of accidents. Would appreciate any input on:

What's the most common complaint or concern when riding a escalator?

Your comments are welcome.

Dear Mr. Joe

The most common complaint is the comb plate damage and the clothes or footwear of the passenger on the escalator got trapped into that.

Other common problem is the kick plate which also create problem when it not properly maintained by the service engineer.

shaking of the handrail and non synchronous movement of the handrail with the steps

These are the practical problems that observed

Thank you for taking the time to reply.

Those issues you noted were the most common ones reported. The comb/clothing problem may be to not having the proper mesh between the step tread plate and the comb teeth.

The kick plate we assume you mean side skirt panels where the switches are set to activate when pushed in. Poor maintenance results in the switches being loose and then they are easily activated falsely.

Handrail problems are very common and as with the other issues are due mostly to poor maintenance performance. As handrail drives are worn and not kept up, they will slow and eventually fail.
