Dr. Fager's world record in the mile on dirt, set while carrying 134 pounds, ranks right up there with Secretariat's record in the mile and one half. To begin with, Dr. Fager's mile is the only standing thoroughbred racing World Record that was set by a horse carrying more than 130 pounds. What is equally astonishing is the effortlessness with which Dr. Fager set the record. Jockey Braulio Baeza never asked anything of the horse and the videos show that he was easing up on him with more than 1/16th of a mile to go. Tens of thousands of horses have run the mile in the 41 odd years since Dr. Fager set the record and none have managed to break it even though they virtually never carry anywhere near as much weight as he did. Typically, the other horses running the mile carry 8-25 pounds less than Dr. Fager did.
