Does anyone know what this means:
S. Maria De Perpetuo Succursu
Vetus imago miraculis
Clara Venerata Romae in Ecclesia
S. Alphonsi
This inscription is on the back of a picture of Our Mother of Perpetual Help.
Thanks

Rosie,

I do not know, but I have one of these with that exact same inscription in my lap right now as I am writing this. I was trying to determine the age and found this link in the Catholic Encyclopedia that discusses the history of the painting and the veneration. Ours is at least 50 years old - may even date back to the early 1900's or possibly to the 1870's or 80's. tinyurldotcom/OurLadyofPerpetualHelp

Further, I found that this is Latin, not Italian and Google Translate translates this as follows

St. Mary of perpetual help
Old imaco miracles
clear offer worship
St. Alphonsus Church in Rome
fullness of
redemption

I am sure that someone who knows Latin better can render a more exact translation. The "Fullness of Redemption" was on the scroll at the bottom of a shield between the two inscriptions.

I am going to write the Church of St Alphonsus in Rome and see what they have to say about this religious icon. Write me at DUStory dash owner at yahoo groups dot com

The Church's own website shows that the inscription is on the outside of the church so this probably came from the church in Rome - wwwdotomph-romadotorg/EN/ENGLISHdothtm
