Does anyone have any information about John Redwood Andersons private life?

I know he was married to Ella Mary S Webber. They had two sons - Edgar Abraham Anderson and Elbert Redwood Anderson. John and Ella were divorced.

His second wife was Eileen Bessie MacCarthy who he married in 1917. Not sure if they had any children.

His 3rd wife was Gwyneth - the neice of suffragette Rachel Barrett. Not sure if they had any children.

Does anyone have any more information that would help please.

Cheers, Carole.

Hi are you still interested in John Redwood Anderson? I have been searching for his private papers for some time. He was a classics master at a school in Hull, East Yorkshire for many years. His poetry was much admired in the 1920s and 30s. He was regarded as a philosophical poet and used strict classical metres. A close friend of John Cowper Powys and Lascelles Abercrombie, also Emile Verhaeren the Belgian Imagist poet who influenced some of his most interesting poetry. He travelled in the Low countries 1912-13. Perhaps he and Ella parted in this way (see below). He moved to North Wales where JCP was living in 1941 when he retired from teaching and as a gentle means of parting from Eileen who seems to have been quite an emotional wreck. Don't know as yet how he met either wife. The boys were born in Devon. There would appear to have been limited contact after the divorce. He doesn't mention them or dedicate poems to them. Elbert went to Australia as a young man and died in 1994. I only found out about the sons from some census records so they are not a live presence in his work despite JRA having many close literary friendships. What isyour interest in JRA? I hardly know anyone who has heard of him these days.

P.S. Found these entries on genforum

The names of JRA's sons suggest he was acutely aware of the American family history.

JRA is my G G Uncle, my father passed away last year and we have recently come across some of JRA letters in an old box, most are written by him to Gwyneth around the time they got married. I am researching our family tree and JRA has done a lot of this awell, but it will take years to go through everything. I'm hoping to find information on the boys and his marriages prior to Gwyneth.

Hi Charlie, this is brilliant news. The letters to Gwyneth must have been written from Corwen in Denbighshire if it was before they were married. JRA had a room over a shop in the Market Square so that address might show up. He was still there in 1951 when there was a massive flood of the River Dee which he wrote a poem about. Have you read any of his work? There is a lot of biographical information in them. Some things may make more sense to you than they do to me.

Would it be possible for you to let me have a transcript of the letters you have found? I can possibly shed some light on the detail for you. I would not publish anything of course but it is of huge interest that you have located these letters. I did try to see what might have happened to Gwyneth's papers as probably there was a lot of his stuff with hers. Maybe we could find out who her executor was. JRA was so respected in his time, it is worth following up on.

My email is mandi.abrahams@btopenworld.com if you are willing to get in touch directly. Where are you located? Did you see in my other post that the Redwood Anderson boys went to Australia? Hope to hear from you again soon.

Yours, Mandi
