Does anybody know the correct valve timing setup for a Minerva Sleeve Valve engine. There are lots of marks on the flywheel but none make sense to me.

Thanking you in advance.

Willys Knight Sleeve Valve engine
Dear Sir,
I am a mechanical engineer living in India, interested in Vintage cars/ engine reconditioning and have a special interest in Sleeve Valve Engines and cars such as Daimler, Willys Knight, Stearns Knight, Minerva, and Voisin which used Sleeve Valve Engines. I have read with interest your posts in 2006 in AACA, and everything I could find on the net about Sleeve Valve Engines. I would like to get in touch with people who own or have hands on experience with reconditioning Sleeve Valve Engines. I have received some replies to my posts in AACA, advising that there is an expert in Sleeve Valve engines who lives in California, USA. Can you pl refer me/send me his email id ? I am also looking for a Sleeve Valve engine to restore as a project and would appreciate if you refer me to someone who is selling one. Sleeve Valve engines are very hard to find here in India.

Pl let me know the details of the marks on the flywheel, alongwith a photo if possible, and I will try to figure it out for you. My email id is

Hi Akhilesh

Read your letter - I have four Yellow Cab motors which are 4 cylinder sleeve valve motors, two of which turn the other two are frozen but would free up with some anti rust oil.

I am about to restore the 1927 Yellow Cab - I have sent the magneto to a specialist to get working and when it is returned will attempt to start the engine in the car. I am awaiting with eager anticipation.

How did you get on finding a motor?

I am assuming that I will have to time the motor by finding TDC on compression and then locating the magneto points to just open at that point. I am uncertain as to the firing order but that is yet to be a problem.

I am in Orford Tasmania Australia - a long way from you.

Regards
John Read
