Cuba was a Spanish colony from 1511 to 1898. Its economy was based on plantation agriculture, mining, and export.

Cuba remained loyal to Spain when other Latin American colonies began to rebel in the 1820s, though this loyalty was based more on economic and military considerations than anything else.
