By 1850 Pittsburgh had become the principal market for coal. Anthracite coal was preferred, but bituminous coal was used for steam engines and in the making of steel.

By the early 20th century soft coal fields had opened in Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, West Virginia, Kentucky and Alabama.
