Colosseum

The Colosseum was used a fortress and a quarry during the Middle Ages; though a small church was erected there, the site wasn't chosen for any specifically religious reason.

Pope Benedict XIV forbade quarrying in the Colosseum and erected the Stations of the Cross around the arena.
