I'm a social work student in Australia and I'm currently doing an assignment about the policy of detaining children in Immigration detention.

In Australia, there are currently 496 children in immigration detention facilities. These facilities are very restrictive and confined.
The Australian Government department of Immigration and citizenship have made some improvements to the detention of children with 611 children currently in community detention.

Community detention allows for children and their families to have increased freedom of movement in the community and living assistance while their asylum claims are processed.

Although moving some children into the community has been a positive change, there is still concern for the children remaining in restrictive detention facilities. More needs to be done for these children. From prolonged periods in detention, children can experious serious physical, social and psychological harm.

There are many human rights organisations in Australia who are concerned for these children and the implications of remaining in detention for so long. Legislation against detaining children must be changed.

I'm very interested in hearing from people from other countries who could tell me about immigration detention where they live. How are children detained? What are some recommendtions for improving this horrible situation?
