Pigeon River (Tennessee - North Carolina)

Can someone please tell me where the Pigeon River rises?

My ancestors migrated from Union Co., SC to the Big Pigeon River in Cocke Co, TN in 1800. They lingered on the Pigeon River a year before moving on to Tompkinsville, Ky where they helped organize the Mill River Church (now the Old Mulkey Church) under the leadership of John Mulkey. At first we imagined that they went over the Alleghenies but in the Sevierville, TN, Historical Society we learned that they likely took the river route along the Pigeon River.

I have been trying to track the Pigeon River through the mountains and can trace it to Beech Gap on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Haywood Co. On the other side of the Parkway, I see the French Broad flowing across Translyvania Co. toward SC. This is confusing to me because the Pigeon joins the French Broad River just past Newport, TN. Obviously there are two Pigeon Rivers.

I welcome comments, suggestions, and most of all, a solution! How did those folks get from Union Co. SC to Newport, TN?
