By the time Donne wrote Meditation 17, he had converted to the Anglican Church; however, he clearly states that "the church is catholic, universal..." Why does he refer to the church as catholic? I know this may seem like a silly question, but I was asked this today and could not honestly answer it. Can anyone help me?
