The old belief that bullies act the way they do because of chronically low self-esteem has now been dis-proven. Recent studies show that bullies in fact possess unusually high self-esteem, though they have most likely done nothing to earn this level of increased self-esteem.

However psychologists believe that because a violent individual's high self-esteem is based on shaky underpinnings, any threat to that self-esteem prompts them to defend it with violence.
