William Shakespeare was known to suffer from an extreme fear of the bubonic plague. Elizabethan children were vulnerable to this illness and the plague had claimed some of Shakespeare's brothers and sisters.

In Elizabethan England, victims of the bubonic plague were sealed up alive inside their houses, with their families. This amounted to a death sentence for all inside, as no one was allowed to enter or exit.
