I am searching the CVC to determine what what section (s) of the CVC extend Authority of the California HIghway Patrol to enforce speed laws within the State of California and what the CVC protocol is for stopping more than one vehicle in tandem for a speed violation. If there is no applicable CVC protocol for more than one vehicle stops. I would like to know that as well. Finally, the required distance to pace a vehicle for sped before enforcement activity.

Thank you

CVC Section 2400 is about enforcing laws regulating the operation of vehicles and the use of the highways.

There is no section limiting the number of vehicles an officer may stop at a time. I've stopped up to three at a time, and know of officers stopping 8 at the same time.

There is no required distance needed for pacing the speed of a vehicle. It just has to be reasonable enough to persuade a traffic judge that it was sufficient.

Thank you. I take it then, there is not a written policy or procedure regarding stopping more than one vehicle at a time for speed? That being understood, it is also my understanding that all activity for CHP must be authorized by a regulation, if the CVC has not adopted a formal policy for a particular event, that event is not an authorized activity? Am I misinformed?

Thanks again,
