As an American of Italian ancestry growing up in Brooklyn NY we always referred to pasta as "macaroni." I don't remember anyone, or entity, including televised commercials or media advertising (such as Ronzoni Marcaroni) calling it anything but macaroni. When did it become fashionable to call macaroni pasta?

Maybe it's just that you and your family and friends call it 'macaroni' instead of 'pasta.'
