In 1855, Brown left for Kansas to assist anti-slavery factions there who wanted to bring Kansas into the Union as a free state.

It is believed that Brown and his followers killed five pro-slavery settlers on 10:00 pm May 24, 1856, in an event known as the Pottawatomie Massacre.
