Now what would truly then be the reason this person is in office? To me it's like he lost the popularity contest in High School and now everyone is switching teams?

Interesting question.

What are his motivations?

He got elected on the promise of "yes we can" (change the world into a better place) That resonated with many many people on both sides of the aisle (conservative/liberal)I know many conservative people that thought seriously about voting in that direction. It seemed such a worth while thing.

The fact is that Obama was elected president by a large and varied group of people. His base of support was liberal dems, but the actual voters were broadly based. His current 'support' problems stem from those voters abandoning him now that he's done nothing but hand out money, increase the national debt, and amplify the already chaotic divisiveness of politics. His promises are revealed not only as false but perhaps as purely political. In other words, he had no serious intention of doing those things he promised to those that voted for him.

So, what are his intentions? That's the million dollar question. When you combine this question with others like: where was he born, what are his past affiliations, who is he loyal too, why does he seem to be looking to force things on people who don't want it (radical health care changes, property rights law, continuation of a non war that is costing us money and lives, etc) things start to look very un-settling.

Only the future will tell how this all shakes out. I just hope we don't look back and say
Man, did we screw up.
