During my twenty-one year career in the Air Force, I served under many fine Officers, but none came close to General Hansford T. Johnson.
We became acquainted when he was Wing Commander of the 22nd Bomb Wing (H) at March AFB, California and I was a B-52D
tailgunner. During his tenure as Commander, he would get his flight time in by flying with various crews and always treated us as professionals and with the upmost respect. I cannot recall any other Commander that was held in such high esteem as General Johnson. He was respected, liked, and supported, not only by those of us who were aircrew, but everyone who had the honor to serve under his command.
Amongst the enlisted ranks is the old adage "an enlisted mans Officer". This certainly applys to General Johnson,as he always made time to insure his troops were cared for and properly trained and equipped.
I am honored to have been able to serve in his Command and would gladly do so again under any circumstances.
God speed General, you were the best.
