A quote often attributed to General George S. Patton (with several variations) "No bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country."

Was this an actual quote of something that they made up for the movie Patton. It certainly seems like something the General would have said but I find different sources that differ on the subject. I used the quote but want to find if it was real or made up for the movie.

Don't know if it's Hollywood or if he actually said it. I'd consider a read of a biography about Patton. Even if you don't find it I'm sure you find the man an interesting subject.

A man who served with Pattons command in Norht Africa told me that he had heard one of Pattons speeches, given to them before departing the US for combat in Africa. This quote was one of many Patton used to "fire up the troops"before combat service. The movie combined several of these quotes he useed and composed a generic speech that is an example of what most men heard. It would be safe to say that it is a true Patton quote!
