A question of this type may be totally out of place here, but I need help.

I am repairing an office chair by trying to replace the lift/tilt mechanism with a new one. Problem is I can't seem to figure out how to get the gas lift column disengaged from the old part. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
